On the Cover: Betye Saar, Energy of the Arts

Meg Whiteford, Managing Editor

For the fall/winter issue of Studio, the editors chose Energy of the Arts by the late, great Betye Saar.

This work from 1989 exemplifies the artist's practice, with its assemblage of materials depicting all range of artistic expression, and with its title, which nods to Saar's decades-long inquiry into the spiritual side of creation, mining the internal, perhaps intrinsic, energy within a work of art. She even provides a nod to the infinite volume of the imagination with a mise en abyme: a small, framed version of the composition carried by the current.
