Uptown Fridays began at the Studio Museum in Harlem in the summer of 2000 to celebrate art, music, and community. This summer, we invite our neighbors in Harlem and friends throughout the city back uptown to our newly reopened building.

DJs and musicians invigorate the Stoop and fifth floor with sonic traditions from the African diaspora. Take a break on our Rooftop Terrace, which offers stunning views of Harlem; explore the galleries; dance to some of the city’s best DJs; and unwind, all throughout the Museum.

Please note: Access to the fifth and sixth floors requires a ticket to Uptown Fridays. Visitors can access all other floors with standard general admission to the Museum. Lineup is subject to change.

DJ Stormin’ Norman
Originally from East London and a longtime Harlem resident, Stormin’ Norman has spent decades at the forefront of New York’s music scene. DJ Stormin’ was part of the WBLS 107.5FM Thunderstorm DJ collective, which premiered live mixing to daytime radio. His signature stylings led to packing out NYC’s top clubs, and Time Out Magazine awarded him Top NYC DJ.

In 2008 he founded the now beloved Sundae Sermon Music Festival, which he has taken from Harlem, to all the boroughs, and onto global stages, including Miami, Australia, and South Africa. From creating Disco Sequestered—a live Twitch stream launched during the pandemic—to most recently opening for legendary queen of disco Gloria Gaynor, DJ Stormin’ keeps the jams coming. DJ Stormin’ also established a Non-For-Profit 501C3 arm named Sundae Sermon For The People, supporting mentorship, Cancer Awareness and Domestic Violence.

Kenneth Lartey
Kenneth Lartey is a director and DJ known for performing open format sets in spaces such as MoMA, Soho House, New Museum, W Hotels and more. His latest film, Amen Break, uses jazz and gospel music as a narrative device, with the film moving between montage, vignettes, and a dance sequence. Lartey’s mixing style takes a similar approach, jumping between different genres and eras of music that includes classic 90s R&B, deep cut throwbacks, and up and coming tracks.

Capacity on the fifth floor and terrace is limited. Drop into music, art, and other activations throughout the Museum over the course of the evening.
