Drawing on a long-standing artistic fascination with the landscape, the work of Xaviera Simmons visually engages the relationship between the body and geography. In this photograph, two women stand across from each other with dresses over their heads and their faces entirely obscured. The staging of these women’s bodies against the red wall—and the shadow formed by the space between their legs—resembles geological forms. Simmons locates the Black female body at the very heart of landscape.
