StudioSound: DJ Kemit

This season’s StudioSound, “Daily Rituals—My Obosum” by DJ Kemit, fuses original compositions with music from some of the DJ’s favorite Afrobeat artists. From traditional African rhythms and new music of this millennium, Kemit constructs a musical terrain in response to the visual stimulation from the artwork in the Flow exhibition. An amalgamation of smoothly flowing soundscapes intertwined with rhythmic musical pulses will transport listeners into the past and catapult them into the future, while making brief stops in the present.
DJ Kemit, born Kevin Hyman in 1969, is CEO of Kemit Muzik, Inc. He began his DJ career at age 12 in Milwaukee and was heavily influenced by the growing house scene in Chicago. A graduate of Howard University, Kemit was once a member of the Grammy-winning group Arrested Development. As a Grammy-nominated producer for his work on Arrested Development’s
second LP and various remixes, Kemit draws his musical delivery from garage classics, hip-hop anthems, deep house and reggae. He now looks forward to making a monumental difference in the shape and promotion of music across the globe. He also currently participates in seven music-based residencies in Atlanta.
Kemit is best known for his work with production partner Justin Chapman (Just One) as KemeticJust, which has released music on labels such as King Street, Yoruba Records, Giant Step, Diaspora Recordings, Wave Music, Bombay Records and Play Records, in addition to dozens of singles. A full-length LP was released on Life Line (Japan) and Pooled Recordings
(Germany) in 2004.

StudioSound invites musicians, producers and musical innovators to create original compositions inspired by the works on view. From Daniel Bernard Roumain’s classically inspired interpretation of Chris Ofili’s watercolors to DJ Scientific’s remix and reinvention of Harlem sounds, this commissioned project activates the Museum’s lobby and adds a parallel dimension to the art and artists on view.
