Studio Sound

04.11-07.01.2007

StudioSound invites musicians, producers and musical innovators to create original compositions inspired by the works on view. From Daniel Bernard Roumain’s classically inspired interpretation of Chris Ofili’s watercolors to DJ Scientific’s remix and reinvention of Harlem sounds, this commissioned project activates the Museum’s lobby and adds a parallel dimension to the art and artists on view. This season, we are thrilled to offer The Gift, a mix CD present to Studio Museum visitors from artist Paul D. Miller, who doubles as acclaimed hip-hop experimentalist DJ Spooky. The CD of remixes, which will be available free in the Studio Museum lobby and on DJ Spooky’s website, www.djspooky.com, is a snapshot of the various remix styles Miller has used over the years in working with artists such as Steve Reich, Yoko Ono, Charlie Parker, Phillip Glass, Metallica, Public Enemy, Ryuichi Sakamoto and others. This “gift” is Miller’s homage to the place of the Studio Museum in the contemporary art world and a representation of his thoughts on the global nature of music, art and creativity. For Miller, music isn't just music, but information that travels the world. He plans to give these CDs away—1,000 will be available—to encourage everyone to join the ephemeral network of sharing he calls “the gift economy.” There, art and music are not commodities, but media for cultural growth and positive creative exchange enabled by connectivity and the latest technology. The mix is also a sonic self-portrait of an artist with a palette full of sound.
