Why is it important to you to be members of The Studio Museum in Harlem?
The Studio Museum in Harlem is one of a number of art institutions we support through membership programs. Our daughter works at the Museum and knows it well, and she encouraged us to visit when we were in New York. We have been so impressed by the intelligence and care of the curatorial staff in choosing works that challenge viewers' assumptions. Harlem residents and all New Yorkers and visitors will find here a rich resource in a vibrant cultural milieu. We also find the Artist-in-Residence program a particularly worthy endeavor.
What has been the most memorable experience or exhibition for you at the Studio Museum?
Martha: I loved the Barkley L. Hendricks exhibition, Birth of the Cool. The life-size portraits were captivating. I was unaware of Hendricks before I saw this exhibit and was excited and intrigued by his work.
Marvin: Hurvin Anderson's fascinating Peter's Series was particularly satisfying in the way it took viewers through a sequence of evolving images.
The Studio Museum recently celebrated its fortieth anniversary. What do you envision for the Museum over the next forty years?
We look forward to continued growth in exhibition space and community outreach, and for the Museum to reach its potential as a world-class, one-of-a-kind institution.
