Sanford Biggers: Sweet Funk - An Introspective
Congratulations to former Studio Museum artist in residence Sanford Biggers on his first solo museum exhibition in New York, opening today at the Brooklyn Museum. Sweet Funk - An Introspective is a focused selection of thirteen pieces that includes Blossom (2007): a large gnarled tree bisecting a jauntily placed piano, whose keys move to an eerie carnival tune from some unseen actor. Meant as a glimpse of his past work, this show touches on themes that pervade Biggers’ oeuvre: pianos, performance art, trees, painted quilts, whiteface, Buddhism and the circus. Organized by Eugenie Tsai, John and Barbara Vogelstein Curator of Contemporary Art. Open to the public Septempber 23, 2011–January 8, 2012.
Sweet Funk is the second of three Sanford Biggers solo exhibitions scheduled for the fall/winter season. Cosmic Voodoo Circus, an exhibition of new work commissioned by SculptureCenter’s Artist-in-Residence program, is currently on view. Curated by Mary Ceruti, Executive Director and Chief Curator. Open to the public September 10–November 22, 2011.
In December, Biggers opens The Cartographer’s Conundrum at MassMoCA, a show inspired by his cousin, the late artist John Biggers (1924-2001). Open to the public December 11, 2011–October 30, 2012.
Sanford Biggers (b. 1970) is a New York-based interdisciplinary artist. He was a 1999–2000 Studio Museum artist in residence and was featured in Freestyle (2001).
