Expanding the Walls
Making Connections Between Photography, History and Community
Expanding the Walls (ETW) is designed to expose youth to the James VanDerZee photographic archive housed at the Museum as a way of generating dialogue and art making that explore ideas of community identity, history and culture. The program combines studio and museum visits with artists, curators and educators, offsite exposure visits with community organizations that deepen the students’ understanding of the social and cultural history ofHarlem and a rigorous course in 35 mm photography. The program culminates with an exhibition of student and VanDerZee photographs curated by the students themselves.
