This thought-provoking video addresses the questions: What is black art? What has its role been historically and in the 20th century? How will it change in the future? What Color is Black was produced on the occasion of the exhibition Narratives of African American Art and Identity: The David C. Driskell Collection at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, surveying African American art from 1870-1997. The film features works by Edward Bannister, Charles Ethan Porter, Robert Scott Duncanson, Aaron Douglas, Romare Bearden, James VanDerZee, Michael Harris, Jerome Meadows, Stephanie Pogue and more.
