About the Exhibitions
Stephen Burks: Man Made, presented by the Studio Museum in Harlem, is a unique project that furthers industrial designer Stephen Burks’s ongoing exploration of the global economy of artisanal craft. Inspired by Burks’s collaboration with Senegalese basket weavers based in New York and Dakar, as well as projects with artisans in South Africa, Peru and India, Man Made starts with the traditional basket-weaving process as its core concept.
Stephen Burks | Are You A Hybrid?, presented by The Museum of Arts & Design, will showcase the work of Stephen Burks and over 20 international designers, artists and photographers, both historical and contemporary, whose influential projects have developing world influences and promote a pluralistic vision of design.
Are You A Hybrid? will share with viewers the furniture, accessories and lighting of designers working at the height of the contemporary design industry whose formal influences or DIY conceptual strategies favor the spirit of immediacy and craftsmanship readily found in cultures of the African diaspora and beyond.
